The days are going by quickly and you feel as if there was something that you forgot to do. Let’s take out the checklist:
- Washed the dishes …check
- Spend time with family…check
- Volunteered at soup kitchen…check
- Prayed all my daily prayers: “….uh”
Prayer is one of the most important; if not the most essential action that a Muslim performs daily that makes him or her a Muslim. It is a vital way to fulfill the purpose of why we were created.
“And I (Allah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone). (Surah 51: Ayah 56)”
This is such a concise ayah, yet it encompasses the basis of Islam, to worship Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala alone through our daily prayers, actions, and Dhikr (remembrance of Allah).
There are multiple emotional and spiritual benefits that one can get from fulfilling this basic tenet of Islam and taking this prescription for overall well being. Here are some reminders as to how prayer helps you for those of us who regularly pray as well as for those of us who are not yet praying, here are some motivational factors as to how prayer can help you.
*Problem 1: You are overwhelmed by the dunya (world) and the multiple goals that you have to accomplish and your things to do list is getting piled on, you feel like you can’t get anything done, and you are stressed out to the max.
Remedy: Praying is an essential way to refocus and remind yourself as to why you are fulfilling the purposes of your goals, and who you are fulfilling the purpose for, and to ask the All Powerful to help you fulfill your goals so that you may get closer to him (Allah). Prayer will help you to feel a sense of calm afterwards and a positive attitude of “With Allah SWT, anything is possible!”
*Problem 2: You have a great job, car, house, spouse, and children yet there is a feeling of emptiness that you can’t find out why you feel removed from your life even though you may have all of these blessings.
Remedy: Thank the one who gave you these blessings daily through prayer and you will feel a deep sense of happiness that you have never felt before. That deep sense of happiness should remind you of Allah SWT’s love for you and to constantly be grateful.
*Problem 3: You are depressed and have no emotional fulfillment:
Remedy: Pray to Allah SWT daily and you will feel a sense of achievement and fulfillment like no other. This discipline of prayer is one that gives you a sense of purpose; helps you structure your life, and make you feel spiritually confident no matter what storm enters your life.
These are just some examples of how prayer can help you with your life. Just plug in your problem and you will see that prayer will surely be a remedy for your problems in life.
“O you who believe! Take care of your own selves, [do righteous deeds, fear Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)]. If you follow the right guidance and enjoin what is right (Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbid what is wrong (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden) no hurt can come to you from those who are in error. The return of you all is to Allah, then He will inform you about (all) that which you used to do. [Al-Maidah 5:105]”
