Green Smoothie Adventure

A few months ago I watched a documentary called Food Matters. Its main point was to show how food can play such an important role in the various illnesses/diseases of your body. Watching it made me realize that some natural ways to help the pain you feel in your body can help more than just simply taking pills, which can cause side effects and never really prevents the pain. It’s really frustrating to go to the doctor and all they have as a solution to your pain is drugs….and if those drugs don’t work….more drugs…and if those don’t’re screwed. There’s never one solution to every illness, but  sometimes eating the right foods can knock out many different illnesses. But not a lot of doctors tell you that, because then pharmaceutical companies would be in major trouble, right? This movie made me think about the diet of the Prophet (s) versus our American diet today. Huge difference.  Today there are so many more problems with our skin, our bodies, our mental health and that’s mostly due to what we eat. This movie didn’t make me want to eat better all in one day, but it did open a door to healthy living.

After watching this movie I felt inspired to do more research.   Continue reading

An Unfit You: Shaytan’s Trick?

tumblr_m03bfkxulA1qm98smo1_1280.jpgShaytan (the accursed devil) tries in every way to deter us from the Straight Path.   If we set up time to memorize Quran, he comes to us and says, “Maybe you should do this other (lesser noble) thing” and we get so distracted that the time to memorize runs out.  Sometimes in order to stir enmity between people he causes negative thoughts and suspicions to arise regarding others.  And the list goes on and on.  In Surah A’raf Allah (swt) describes his determination: “[Iblis (the devil) said] Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them as thankful ones (i.e. they will not be dutiful to You).” (Quran, Surah A’raf, 17)

One of the subtle ways he can “trick” you is through the use of food; especially food that is unhealthy for you such as sugary sweets or fried treats.  (Wow that rhymes :))  Now I know what you may be thinking: “But these foods are halal so how can he use that?”  Yes, these foods are halal but the overindulgence of them leads you to being overweight which makes it harder for you to do things such as pray the 5 prayers or to get up for tahajjud prayer amongst others.  In Surah Nazi’at, Allah describes the rain that come down and produces a variety of food and then after describing them, He says “To be a provision for you and your cattle.”  The word Mata’a that is used in the Surah means something you use but do not enjoy (according to the Bayyinnah tafseer podcasts).  The Arabs use that word for the sponge you use to wash dishes with, it is definitely something useful but not necessarily enjoyable. 6 Ways to Achieve Happiness

Bismi-llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīmi (بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم)

It is an innate human need to be happy.  Every person on earth is trying to find happiness whether it is through the body’s desires or through attaining wealth and fame.  However if true happiness is to be found one needs to ask the One who created us.  For it is only our true Owner that can tell us what it is we need to be happy.  I thought it would be a good reminder to list the real things that truly do make us happy, things that our Creator has ordained and things that are very different from what we have subconsciously learned will give us happiness.

1.  Salah (prayer)– The chores, homework, errands, work demands, school demands, family demands, not to mention the various injustices happening in the world can all take a toll on the person.  How does one relax? How does one take a break from it all?  Bow down to your Creator 5 times a day and stand in gratitude and great humility and say “I don’t know Ya Allah . You know. And only You can helps us.”  Prayer will leave you with a feeling of happiness and a feeling of confidence enabling you to accomplish even more during your day.

2.  Quran:  If you’ve ever wanted to change something about your self for the better, start by reading the Quran everyday in Arabic and in translation/tafseer.  You are probably wondering what does Quran have to do with me losing 30 pounds or with me bettering my iklhaq (character).  The Quran adds barakah to whatever it is you are going to do, including your time.  Make the Quran your true companion and Allah (swt) will make it easy for you to achieve any goal.

What’s in Your Closet?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

tumblr_mj441uN3ZF1qkdsfyo1_1280.jpgDuring my college years I had a Christian friend who was devoutly Christian.  She converted to the faith after being raised with basically no religion.  Upon graduation she did something that I found very hard to understand,  she moved into a one bedroom hotel like apartment in an area of town that was not the most safe or inviting.

I found this difficult because she went from sharing a spacious house (with a roommate) to living in an apartment that literally used to be a hotel with only a small window that one could barely open to get some fresh sunlight!  This friend had a well-paying job and was on her way to a successful career, so for her to choose to live under such conditions was unbelievable to me.  So I asked her one day why doesn’t she live in a better place where she can have windows and not be afraid to go out at night.  She laughed and said my parents say the same thing and it’s not what I want.

I soon found out through our conversations that it was her religion that had influenced her to do this.  She believed that Christianity meant having to forsake all the comforts of this life (dunya) and making do with little even when you can afford to have more.  Basically it was the belief that things are a distraction from the worship of God and that in order to truly be close to Him one has to get rid of all these distractions.  At the time I did not understand my own religion well enough (May Allah forgive me) to offer any point of view.  Yet even then I knew in my gut that this was not the correct way to get closer to God. What the Eyes See

About 99% of United States households own a television and on average most Americans households have more than one television.  I grew up with a television in my household and I can personally attest to the negative effects of it.  However, I never had a reason to get rid of it until that is I started to learn more about the Deen (religion).  That knowledge opened my eyes and enabled my intellect to analyze the activities/hobbies in my life and ask the question: “is this beneficial to me either in this life or the next.”

After a critical analysis and after observing the effect it had on me, I decided that after I got married, I would not have this distraction in my house.  A decision that I have yet to regret, since I have been TV free for about two years and both my husband and I love it.  In this article I want to talk about the effects it did have on my life, the reasons I got rid of it, and how anyone reading this should consider doing the same. Biking Your Way To Adventure

Being adventurous is a quality that everyone would like to have. When you take a risk, you develop characteristics that you thought you never really had. I think it’s important to be an adventurous person who is open to different things, of course within halal boundaries ;).

For example, biking is not only a great way to enjoy the outdoors but it’s a way to get exercise, de-stress and enjoy the beautiful ni’mahs(blessings) of Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala (exalted is He). It’s also a great way to relax and get a chance to clear the mind. Being at your office, school, and home all day can take a toll on a person spiritually and physically and it’s important to lighten the burden in order to come back refreshed better than ever.  It is also a perfect time to be reminded of the many beauties that Allah SWT has bestowed upon us.  Continue reading
